A Cyrillic converter is any device or program which converts characters in the Cyrillic alphabet to characters in another alphabet. The Cyrillic alphabet was developed in the Middle Ages by missionary Saints Cyril and Methodius as they sought to convert the Bible into Slavic tongues in order to increase conversion from paganism to Christianity. These saints borrowed letters from Greek and Latin
. and created others letters. Because the Cyrillic alphabet was created specifically to serve the then-illiterate Slavic peoples, it more accurately reflected their distinctive sounds. Words written in Cyrillic letters are easy for those who know the Cyrillic alphabet to pronounce; i.e., there are no silent letters or tricky letter combinations as in English. For this reason, there is no letter-to-letter conversion between the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. For example, the Cyrillic letter written similarly to a "w" is "shchah", and sounds exactly like it is spelled. There is no equivalent letter in English. Those seeking to converter Cyrillic letters are instead encouraged to learn the Cyrillic letters themselves.
