Medical professionals rely on a coding system developed by the American Medical Association (AMA) for a standard way to describe procedures used by healthcare providers. The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) list is created and updated by the AMA every year. It is owned entirely by the Association who maintains control of the document in every way. With a copyright on the document, the AMA is
. entitled to allow or deny access to the document as it sees fit. It is under no obligation to provide access through downloads or any other way to use of it by anyone who is not approved by the AMA.A primary purpose of the CPT is to provide a common reference that may be used for patient billing and for insurance providers other than Medicare. A patient may be able to see the code on statements he receives from a doctor's office, but it is not likely to have the definition of the code spelled out. One may inquire of the doctor the meaning of the code, or one may be able to find the definition on line. As the sole owner of the CPT, the AMA takes the responsibility for the accuracy of the information that it contains.Codes for medical procedures that are no longer practiced are deleted from the list each year, and new ones are added as they become viable new practices. Lists from previous years may contain inaccuracies based on the changes that become effective through the annual updating procedure. The AMA offers a site at http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/physician-resources/solutions-managing-your-practice/coding-billing-insurance/cpt.page that allows a reader to have limited access to the list. A search feature is available, but one may use it only a few times. Information on the site explains the limits that are allowed by the copyright, and a reader may follow the purchase links. The Code Manager site at https://ocm.ama-assn.org/OCM/CPTRelativeValueSearch.do similarly offers limited access to unauthorized users.More reference links: http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/physician-resources/solutions-managing-your-practice/coding-billing-insurance/cpt.page https://ocm.ama-assn.org/OCM/CPTRelativeValueSearch.do
