The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) covers an employee for up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave during a 12 month period. There are several reasons why an employee can take this medical leave but it must be approved by a physician and the employer and often times has to be documented so its very important to check with human resources on your employer's policy. You may take FMLA for the birth or care
. of your newborn child. Adoptive parents are also eligible which is important because they need time to bond. If you have to care for an immediate family member due to a serious healthcare you're also eligible for FMLA.
