Unbelievably, engineered wood beams are actually stronger than regular one piece beams. Engineered beams are several pieces of wood glued together under high pressure. By putting the grains in different directions the strength is improved. Not to say they cannot be broken, they are just stronger. They are commonly used on most new construction.
