Documentum is a contact management system designed for enterprise use by EMC Corporation of Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The software was originally designed and implemented by the Documentum Corporation, which was purchased by EMC in December, 2003 for $1.7 billion. Documentum was founded in 1990 by Howard Shao and John Newton. They developed the software as a customized product for Boeing to solve
. the problem of managing and distributing unstructured information such as documents, images, video and audio that did not fit into standard relational databases. This approach worked well with the Boeing 777 aircraft training manuals, and the experience led Documentum to other contracts and further development of the software. The company became publicly traded on the NASDAQ system on February 5th, 1996 under the symbol DCTM. The core of Documentum is EDMS, the Electronic Document Management System. This server-based product provides access controls to large quantities of unstructured information residing on a central shared server, allowing users to track, manipulate and update complex sets of electronic documents. In 1998, Documentum introduced its Web Applications Environment, which gives users access to EDMS repositories through a standard Web browser. Over the next several years, the company continued to refine and expand the capabilities of the product, adding features including records management, forms processing, digital asset management, collaboration and enterprise content integration. The most recent release of Documentum, version 6.7, was released in April, 2011. The Documentum Standard version includes several different stand-alone modules, including CenterStage, Platform, Repository Services for Microsoft SharePoint, and Webtop. The system, written in Java, is very flexible and can be modified to suit the needs of any particular company. It runs on nearly any standard operating system including Windows, Apple OS and Unix. Application programming interfaces are available including web services, WebDAV, FTP, Java, Documentum Foundation Classes and SMB/CIFS. http://www.emc.com/products/family/documentum-standard-family.htm or http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v8/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db2.ii.doc/opt/c0007264.htm
