A great weekend project is diy laying a patio. There are many different choices in materials for patios, so a little research is in order. The easiest is to dry lay a brick or paver patio. To do this, you excavate out the area of the patio, then bring in some crushed rock, level the crushed rock, then put down another 2" of sand. Then you lay the bricks on the sand.
