What is didactic teaching? Didactic teaching is the more traditional, teacher-centered method of instruction that has dominated public school education for centuries. In the past couple of decades, a revolution of sorts to move classrooms from teacher-centered to learner-centered has proven quite popular. In fact so strong is this movement that some educators favor a totally learner-centered methodology; however, most experts agree teachers need to use a variety of teaching techniques in order to serve all students effectively.Many learners are auditory learners and tend to grasp concepts best when they hear them presented. Didactic teaching is ideal for this type of learner as it involves the teacher instructing the students through lecture and other teacher-directed activities. In the classroom setting, of course, the teacher is presumably the expert. He or she is the one who has the most experience and knowledge about a given subject. Naturally, the teacher then is the one who shares this information with the students. Often this can prove an effective way to educate. Didactic teaching does not by definition have to exclude the incorporation of methods other than straight lecture. For instance, by including graphs, maps and charts in the lesson, the teacher can engage the visual learner, that student who learns best by observation. Teachers can also involve the students in the lessons by asking questions and eliciting answers from the class and by encouraging student participation in demonstrations.Didactic teaching, despite a sometimes bad reputation, can include more than teacher lectures and student note-taking. Effective didactic teachers work hard to include as much participation from students as possible. They simply operate under the assumption that the teacher, by virtue of his or her advanced knowledge, is there to lead the students and to communicate that expertise. Didactic teaching, while teacher-led, is not necessarily student-excluding, and it can prove an integral part of education.
