Stainless steel is composed of a minimum of 11% Chromium. Chromium has a high affinity for oxygen, that is, it wants to hold on to the oxygen. This causes it to form a stable oxide film on the surface of the steel. This film is resistant to further chemical or physical change. Stainless steel does on rust, corrode or stain as easily as ordinary steel.
