Retained earning is the undistributed earnings of a company. It is calculated as Assets = Liab. + Owner's Equity ( Beg (capital) + Add'l Paid-in capital + Revenues - expenses - drawings). Earnings not paid out as dividends but instead reinvested in the core business or used to pay off debt. also called earned surplus or accumulated earnings or unappropriated profit.
