When deciding to paint your deck, you first want to remove all traces of previous paint, stains, oils, grease or anything else that might have been on the wood. A power washer sandpaper, wire brush, steel wool or paint scrapers will remove this in no time. It is highly recommended that you apply two coats of primer before you start the actual painting. Our favorite primer is Kilz Premium
. Primer because it prevents mold and mildew, which happens a lot with outdoor venues due to exposure to the elements. Use a roller or paint brush to apply the primer so it will soak into the wood and protect it well. Allow the coats to dry thoroughly in between. Do not use any ordinary paint. Use paint especially designed for porches and this won?t be a time to go with the cheapest. This paint will take a beating from the elements so you want it to last and be done right the first time. Sherwin Williams or Behr have great, high quality paints. When painting remember to start at the top and work your way down. Painting is a messy job and you will inevitably have paint drips and splatters. If you have started at the top, those paint drips will get painted over in a hurry, and you will have a flawless finish.
