Writing a story intimidates many new writers because it is seen as a complex task which can easily result in failure. This fear is somewhat valid, so it is best for those who are new to writing to begin with a simpler project. One of the best examples of this is the narrative paragraph. . better understand the structure and purpose of such writing, one should explore the basic components of a narrative paragraph and view completed examples of it. Within a narrative paragraph, the first step is to provide the setting for the story which is being told. This includes letting the reader know where the story took place, when it occurred and how it came to take place. At this point in the writing, it is also useful to introduce the main character or characters. It is now time to introduce the story through describing the initial events of it. After these events are described, the core plot of the story should be written. This plot should contain a distinct focus and purpose. Following this component of the story, a conclusion should be written that ties up any loose ends from the plot and provides a brief directive as to what the reader ought to have gained from reading the story. The following is a short example of a narrative paragraph: I was only eight when I found myself hiding in a closet of our small house in the Appalachian Mountains. The weather had already turned cold, so I grabbed a jacket under which to hide. I was sure that at any moment the door would fly open and I would be discovered by father. He had left us months ago, but I was sure that tonight he would come back to hurt us. I heard his truck driving through the packed snow. Then, there were softly crunching footsteps. The door opened, and I held my breath. Instead of my father's heavy breathing, there was a soft hum that I immediately recognized as that of my mother. I threw open the closet door and ran to hug my mother. I cried. I miss my father. I so wish he would come home.
