Although we can taste all qualities over the entire tongue, some taste buds that distinguish specific tastes are concentrated in certain portions of the tongue. The sweet taste area is at the tip of the tongue. Right behind it and along the sides are the salty areas. The sour taste areas are on both sides a little inside the salty area. And the bitter taste areas are at the back of the tongue.
