The Airbus A340 is one of a series of long-range, high capacity commercial airliners built by Airbus Industrie, a consortium of European aircraft manufacturers. It first flew in 1991 and entered service in 1993, flying for Lufthansa, Iberia Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and South African Airways. Airbus built 375 examples of the aircraft before production ceased in November of 2011.The A340 was built in four different fuselage lengths, allowing between 375 and 440 passengers to be carried depending on the sub-model. The extended A340-600 was built for the larger number of passengers, with additional fuel storage allowing a range of up to 9,000 nautical miles.Every airline operating the A340 had a slightly different seating arrangement. All were based on a three-class design - first, business and economy - with the chief variable being the number of first class and business class seats available. First class was always at the front of the aircraft, with around seven rows of first class seats, six abreast. The business class seating followed, 13 rows of seats with four seats in the middle of the aircraft and two on each side. The last 16 rows were economy class, again with seating eight abreast with the exception of the last three rows which were six abreast due to the narrowing of the fuselage at the rear of the aircraft. Restrooms were placed at the dividing points between each class and at the rear.Some aircraft were configured with fewer first class seats that were wider and more comfortable and provided extended legroom. Seat widths ranged from 23 inches in first class to 18 inches in economy.Since seating arrangements are a variable, the traveler is advised to check with their airline of choice to determine exactly how their aircraft is configured in order to be properly prepared for flight.
