"The anterior talofibular ligament(ATFL) is the most common and weakest ligament associated with ankle sprains. It connects the anterior fibula to the neck talus. The length of the ligament is about 20 mm long, 10 mm wide, and 2 mm thick. The function of anterior talofibular ligament is to allow for range of motion on the ankle. When this ligament becomes over-stretched, a first degree sprain
. occurs. However, if the ligament is damaged, it results in a severe sprain. The damage of the anterior talofibular ligament is most common among the athletes.Diagnosis: The treatment varies based on the extent of damage of the ligament. It can be examined by the location of the bruising, swelling and tenderness. Stress testing of the ligament is done to determine the extent of damage of the ligament. X-rays are done to make sure whether or not there are torn ligaments or possibility of fractured bone. Majority of the treatments include rest, ice, elevation, and compression."
