A weighted average is an important number to be able to calculate. It is of particular importance in academics, as some teachers or professors prefer to place more weight, or importance, on one grade over others. An example of this would be a class where the test average is 70 percent of the grade, homework is 15 percent of the grade, and class participation is 15 percent of the grade. In this
. example, the way that the weighted average would be calculated is as follows: 0.70x(test average)+0.15x(homework grade)+0.15(class participation)=the total class grade. The test average is multiplied by 0.70, or 70 percent as that is the weight, or percentage that it is worth. The homework and class grade are also multiplied by 0.15 or 15 percent, as that is the weight of that aspect of the grade.
