During a job interview process, employers often require references for prospective employees. Although human resource directors and supervisors handle many such requests over the phone, some will request a formal letter of reference for placement in the employee's file. Addressing the letter to the appropriate person is always preferred; reference sources may address the letter "To whom it may
. concern" or to a specific title if the person requesting the letter does not provide a name. Follow the salutation with a short paragraph identifying the name of the person recommended and the purpose of the recommendation. In the second paragraph of the letter, provide specific reasons to recommend the candidate. Job accomplishments, personality qualities and quality of the applicants work should offer specifics rather than generalities. Conclude the letter with summary recommendation and contact information if the recipient has questions.
