Problems receiving On This Day

Sometimes we have problems delivering On This Day to some of our subscribers. Most frequently the problem is caused by a temporary network outage or software misconfiguration on the receiving end. If you are a subscriber but you are not receiving your daily message, please check with your mail administrator to make sure that mail from <thisday@reference.com> is allowed to be delivered to your mailbox, and to make sure that there are no other problems preventing you from receiving your e-mail.

You may also wish to check the settings in your e-mail program to make sure it isn't incorrectly flagging our messages as spam. If you find that On This Day is going to your trash folder or to a 'bulk mail' folder, then you will want to adjust your junk mail filter.

Note that if you are subscribed according to our system, that means we are sending you On This Day every day. However, once we send the e-mail, it is out of our hands. The reason you are not receiving is because something is preventing delivery. Typically that problem is an aggressive spam filter or something else on the receiving end.

Hotmail users

If you are not receiving On This Day, the reason is most likely Hotmail's 'Junk Mail Filter', which is supposed to block 'spam', or unsolicited bulk e-mail ('junk mail'). Unfortunately, it also blocks some solicited mail, including On This Day.

You can either disable the Junk Mail Filter, or add <thisday@reference.com> to the 'Safe List', which is the list of accounts that you do not want the Junk Mail Filter to block. To do so, you will need to log in to your Hotmail account, select 'Options', then select 'Safe List'.

You will probably find any editions of On This Day you have missed either in your 'Junk Mail' folder or in the 'Trash' folder.

If after doing the above you are still not receiving On This Day, the problem is likely on the receiving end. You may wish to contact Hotmail for assistance.

Yahoo users

If you are a Yahoo Mail user, please check your Bulk Mail folder. If you find our message in your Bulk Mail folder, open it and click on "Send to Yahoo! for Review" to let them know that On This Day is not unsolicited commercial e-mail (spam).

If you do not want a Bulk Mail folder at all, go to Mail Preferences.

If after doing the above you are still not receiving On This Day, the problem is likely on the receiving end. You may wish to contact Yahoo for assistance.

Temporarily suspending your subscription

We also have no way of suspending your subscription, but you can unsubscribe and subscribe again whenever you want.

To subscribe via e-mail, send a blank message to: join-onthisday@lists.lexico.com.

To unsubscribe via e-mail, send a blank message to your personal unsubscribe address, which you will find at the bottom of every On This Day mailing we send you.

Alternative deliver schedules

We are unable to send On This Day only on certain days. However, you can unsubscribe and subscribe again whenever you want. That way you can take a break if the volume of e-mail gets to be too much.

You can always browse through all days from the On This Day home page. In the navigation bar, simply select the month and day you would like to see.

If you are receiving duplicate messages

The On This Day e-mail and related notification messages are sent out only once. If you are receiving multiple copies, first check to see whether the e-mail is going to different addresses. You can do so by checking at the bottom of On This Day e-mail, where the address of the recipient is always given. If you are receiving On This Day at different addresses, you can unsubscribe any of them by following the directions at the bottom of the e-mail.

If you are getting multiple e-mails to the same address, it's likely a problem with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or your computer setup, but please see the special note below. You may wish to contact ISP's technical support and let them know you are having this problem.

If you have unsubscribed, you will receive no further mailings from us in the future. However, any messages that have already been sent in the past may still be delivered. We are not sending the messages multiple times, but due to this glitch the same message may be delivered multiple times.

If you continue to receive our messages after you have unsubscribed, you may wish to block any messages from <thisday@reference.com>, which is the address from which On This Day is sent. You can typically do this by applying "filters" or "rules." Please consult the help system or documentation that came with your e-mail application for specific instructions, as different applications have different procedures.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
