Apollonia

Apollonia [Gr.,=of Apollo], name of several ancient Greek towns. The most important was a port in Illyria on the Adriatic. It was founded by Corinthians and was later a Greek and a Roman intellectual center. Julius Caesar used it as a base. Octavian (later Augustus) received news of Julius Caesar's death while stationed at Apollonia. Among the other towns of this name, there was one in Thrace on the Aegean (a town famous for a large statue of Apollo), one in N Sicily, and another in Chalcidice (Khalkidhikí).
