 Jack Masquelier is the brilliant scientist who discovered OPCs in 1948 and invented the first viable method to isolate them from plants in a quality that allowed therapeutic and nutritrional use. Dr. Jack Arthur Masquelier, Professor Emeritus of the University of Bordeaux, France, is one of the early pioneers who greatly contributed to shedding light on the structure, chemistry, nomenclature, determination, isolation, and applications of the flavanols compounds which, today, are known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins or OPCs. Born in 1922 in Paris, Dr. Masquelier got his degree in Pharmacy in 1945 and his doctorate in 1948. He has worked at the "Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie" of the University of Bordeaux, France, from 1941 until 1984. He is Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Quebec (1974) and Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Portugal (1996).  Dr. Masquelier received his 'Professor' title to the Chair of "Matière Médicale" in 1956 and he became the Vice Dean of the "Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie" in 1957. In 1970 he was appointed Dean of the "Faculté de Pharmacie". Dr. Masquelier became Professor Emeritus in 1984. Dr. Masquelier was rector of the French "Union Nationale des Oenologues" and founding member of the Plant Phenolics group of Oxford, UK and of the "Groupe Polyphénol" in France. He was "Chef de Laboratoire" of the Saint-André hospital from 1952-1956 and "chargé de cours" at the Institute of Oenology from 1960-1984. From 1963-1974, Dr. Masquelier was also Professor in phytochemistry at the University of Laval in Quebec Canada and he was official expert for the French Ministry of Health in the domain of the analysis of medicines.  Prof. Dr. Jack Masquelier’s 40-year academic career, which began at the faculty of medicine and pharmacy at the university of Bordeaux, France in 1946 has been devoted to teaching and research. During the course of his scientific career, Prof. Masquelier invented various methods to extract OPCs from various plant sources so as to obtain OPCs products of a high quality.
