From Middle English sclave < Mediaeval Latin sclavus < Byzantine Greek σκλάβος < Old Church Slavonic словѣнинъ (slověninŭ), словѣне (slověne), “‘Slav’”). Probably related to слово (slovo), “‘word, speech’”). Beyond this, the ultimate etymology has long been a matter of dispute among linguists.
