The College, in partnership with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, is developing a framework of inter-professional patient safety competencies to advance patient safety education curricula, continuing professional development and ultimately better patient care. A competency framework will be released at the College's International Conference on Residency Education in September, and the Canadian Healthcare Safety Symposium (Halifax Conference) in Winnipeg, in October 2008.

The Royal College will hold its Annual Business Meeting (in accordance with the provisions of Article 9.2.2 of Bylaw No. 15) on September 26, 2008, in Ottawa. The Annual Business Meeting (ABM) is an opportunity for members to take an active part in the business of the College. The 2008 ABM will cover a number of important topics, including discussion on the College’s proposed governance model and proposed changes to Bylaw No. 15.

The Canadian Society of Telehealth is the national voice of telehealth (telemedicine) in Canada. From October 5 -7, 2008, the Society will hold its annual conference in Ottawa, co-hosted by the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth. The theme is: Convergence to Care: Patients, Providers and Technology. A pre-conference symposium in telemedicine for physicians will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2008.

The first step toward eligibility for the 2009 certification examinations in a primary specialty (including the 2009 Principles of Surgery examination) is to submit an application for preliminary assessment of training by April 30, 2008, 17:00 EST, to the Credentials Unit by fax to 613-730-3707. A late penalty fee of $500 will be charged for applications submitted after April 30 and $1,000 for applications submitted after July 30, 2008.

The 2009 registration forms and instructions will be mailed in late November to eligible candidates whose registration forms have not been received for the 2008 examination session.
