Digital Scores Collection
The Loeb Music Library, using the systems and services for image digitization developed by the Harvard University Library's (HUL) Library Digital Initiative, is creating an expansible resource of scanned images of rare and unique musical scores that will be freely available via the Web for classroom and research use at Harvard and to scholars all over the world. As digital versions become available via the Harvard University Library's Page Delivery Service (PDS), we will provide links to them from this Web page as well as from the HOLLIS catalog.

Franz Hauser, one of the founding members of the Bachgesellschaft, prepared one of the first catalogs of any kind of the works of J.S. Bach. This manuscript catalog only recently resurfaced—it had not been seen by scholars for 100 years—and the library acquired it in 2002. Pencil notations in a different hand.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus, 1756-1791. Wolfg. Ama. Mozarts Grosse Sinfonie / ins Clavier gesetzt... von Johann Wenzel. 1te Ausg. Prag: Zu haben beym Verfasser; Leipzig: In der Breitkopfischen Buchhandlung, [ca. 1794]. Merritt Room Mus 745.1.54.39.5.
This document, one of nine extant copies, offers a glimpse into the role of music in 18th-century life. Mozart's 39th symphony was arranged for piano by one of his younger contemporaries and published a few years after the elder composer's death. Of particular note is the rather extensive subscriber list indicating the character and breadth of support for publications of this kind.
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus, 1756-1791. La scuola degli amanti, ossia, Cosi fan tutte: dramma gioccoso in due atti / del sigr. Wolfango Amadeo Mozart. Merritt Room Mus 745.1.661.9.
This manuscript [late 18th or early 19th centry] predates the first published edition. It is a previously unknown copy that varies from other copies and may provide important information about performance history and genesis of the opera.
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus, 1756-1791. Die Entführung aus dem Serail del Sigr. Mozart. Merritt Room Mus 745.1.627.4.
This manuscript [late 18th or early 19th century] is a unique item. According to Bas Blomhert, scholar of the opera, "I must congratulate you on the acquisition of this manuscript. It is a very rare manuscript indeed and presents the opera in the version of what I call stage II.... There is only one manuscript that does the same, the DO Mus. Ms 1390a, now in the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe. In Berlin there is a copy of more or less the same contents, but it dates from the beginning of the 19th century and is therefore... a copy of a copy of used performing material not authentic."
