Role
of the Media in the Construction of Social
Reality
(Spring 2008)
The
spring issue of the GMJ: Mediterranean Edition
is focused on the role of the media in the
construction of social reality. Dalia Gavriely Nuri,
Hagar Lahav and Nirit Topol explore the
representations of women in the Israeli
press, Erin Steuter and Deborah Wills
consider the role of the press in dehumanizing the face
of war, Gökçen Karanfil discusses “the ways in
which transnational media are deployed by diasporic
subjects" using the Turkish diaspora in Australia
as an exemplar. Next, Amani
Ismail conducts a textual analysis of websites that
belong to two organizations classified as “terrorist” by
the U.S. government (Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic
Jihad) and examines how cyberspace is used as a
vehicle for the circulation of otherwise
marginalized
points-of-view. The fifth article, by Ahmet Uysal
considers the role of the Turkish press in the promotion
of religious reform in the
context of tradition and modernity in
contemporary Turkey.
In our
book review section, there is
a wide selection of reviews
of contemporary texts in communication and culture.
