Gender Crash Open mic

with Feature: Mel Petrosky

Mel Petrosky is an eclectic individual who has dreamed of being a writer since age fourteen. Mel first hit the poetry scene back in 2000 appearing at The Amazon Slam in Cambridge, but now is a regular at Gender Crash and Got Poetry Live in Providence, RI. Mel’s poetry has been published four times and some is available at www.myspace.com/bluecitypoet. You can also find Mel’s column “News Muse” and other articles monthly in Rhode Island’s Options Magazine or at www.optionsri.org. Mel’s poetry has expansive scope, ranging from haiku, to simple word sketches, to detail laden confessional style pieces. Mel is known for drawing raw, honest, intricate portraits of life, both from personal and outside experiences. Familiar topics of inspiration are love, sex, gender, addiction, loss, mortality, nature and Paris. Mel’s first chapbook is in the works and will have a limited edition printing including Mel’s photography.

In addition to being a photographer and poet, Mel is an attorney in Massachusetts specializing in low-come and underrepresented groups. Mel is currently developing a practice that focuses on serving the low and middle income queer, trans, and elder communities. Mel strives to infuse all artistic endeavors with a potpourri of life experiences, as well as a unique and eclectic perspective. Ultimately, Mel hopes the work reflects the paradoxically inherent variety, simplicity, complexity and beauty of daily existence.

Saying good bye... to Gender Crash in January 2009
I am retiring Gender Crash Open Mic as of January 2009.
Thursday, January 9, 2009 will be the last Gender Crash Open Mic
I will be putting together a Good-Bye show for that night, watch the website for future details.

As you may know, Gender Crash has been running for almost 9 years and has been an amazing event for me personally. I am so appreciative of all of the folks who have ever read and/or attended. I believe Gender Crash has helped to bring about awareness about transgender and gender variance in a unique way as well as provided community space. To my knowledge, Gender Crash has been the longest running transgender run open mic event in the country.
But at this point in my life I am juggling so many things such as my senior year of college, being a new executive director of a small but mighty trans organization - the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, tending to my own family, and recently some health issues, that I feel I am not able to put the energy or time into Gender Crash. I also feel very strongly that I should move out of the way to give space for new up an coming organizers to blossom.

I am retiring the name Gender Crash and I will be asking that no other event use that name, I hope that this will be respected. I will be continuing the website with the help of community members and it will become a community blog and resource page, the overhaul is in the works as we speak.

Until January I do have several upcoming features at Gender Crash:
October 9 - The Femme Show
November 13 - Providence's own Mel Petrosky
December 11 - Alicia Greene

I will be putting together occasional shows that will feature poets/spoken wordsters/literary geeks/journal writers/queers/transgender/gender queers in and around Boston area in the upcoming year. I will also be continuing my collaboration with DJ D'hana through the Neighborhood Dance Night.

I want to close by thanking everyone for their support of Gender Crash and especially all the folks who have ever braved the stage to read there. We have all made history!
