Yamamoto

[yah-mah-maw-taw]
Yamamoto, Gombei, 1852-1933, Japanese admiral. He was navy minister (1898-1906) during the Russo-Japanese War. Yamamoto was later (1913-14, 1923-24) prime minister. His first cabinet was involved in a scandal concerning the construction of battleships.
Yamamoto, Isoroku, 1884-1943, Japanese admiral in World War II. He headed the combined fleet in 1941 and was the mastermind behind Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. After he was killed in action in 1943, he became a national hero. Throughout his career he worked to build an integrated air-surface arm for the navy.

See H. Hagawa, The Reluctant Admiral (1982).

Yamamoto (山本 meaning "base of the mountain") is one of the most popular Japanese surnames.

In Mathematics Yamamoto may refer to the Lubell-Yamamoto-Meshalkin inequality, named for Koichi Yamamoto et al.

By far the most famous Yamamoto, however, is Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.
