Centro Legal de la Raza

Centro Legal de la Raza is a dynamic and grassroots law and community development center. Since 1969, Centro Legal has provided free, bilingual, and culturally appropriate legal, education and advocacy services for low-income, Latino and immigrant communities in the East Bay region of Northern California.

Centro Legal de la Raza provides legal services in the areas of housing law for low-income tenants, employment law for low-wage workers, immigration law, consumer protection law, workmans compensation law, and some family law, including assistance for victims of domestic violence. To learn about Centro Legal, write info@centrolegal.org and ask to be placed on our email newsletter listserve. Also, check us out at www.centrolegal.org.

Centro Legal de la Raza is home to the model high school program called The Youth Law Academy. The Youth Law Academy is an innovative project that combines after-school programming, academic support, mentorship opportunities with local judges and attorneys, internship opportunities, college preparation and intensive SAT preparation for local high school youth. Every high school graduate of The Youth Law Academy who is admitted to a four year university receives a $10,000 college scholarship!

Centro Legal de la Raza also supports a day laborer project called Lucha Unida del Jornalero (United Struggle of Day Laborers). Lucha Unida is an association of Oakland day laborers who have come together to advance economic, civil and human rights issues for day laborers. Last year, Carlos Mares, a former day laborer and one of the founders of Lucha Unida, participated in the National Day Labor Run for Peace and Dignity, and ran from Los Angeles to New York City speaking to over 15,000 day laborers along the way.

Recently, Centro Legal de la Raza joined forces with the Asian Law Caucus, Grupo Maya, Street Level Health Project and Lucha Unida del Jornalero to found a multi-tenant nonprofit center called The Oakland Worker Center. Now, The Oakland Worker Center houses these organizations and creates an ideal space for synergy among a diverse range of low wage workers.

Finally, Centro Legal de la Raza has launched a Workforce Development Project that provides job development, job readiness and financial literacy training for members of our community.
