Youssouf Hersi (born 20 August 1982 in Dire Dawa) is a Dutch football player of Ethiopian origin who currently plays for FC Twente. He began his career with Ajax, before moving onto NAC. On January 16, 2007 it was revealed that Hersi had signed a three-year contract with FC Twente, which started on July 1, 2007.
Hersi was once asked about possibly joining the Ethiopian team in 2005, and Hersi indicated that he would be keen to do so, but he would never play for his native country. This was due to nationality transfer regulations in the new FIFA statutes, which came into force in 2004. The statutes allowed players under the age of 21 who never played for a senior national football team to change the nationality of the senior team, subject that the player has some "relations" to the "new" nation. A provision clause which would expire 12 months after the statutes came to in force in 2004 also allowed players over 21 to apply for a nationality transfer, provided they never played in the senior team of another nation. After this provision expired, players over 21 were only allowed to represent the senior team of the country they represented in youth level. Hersi was over 21 when this provision expired, and since he hadn't made the move to Ethiopia, he was only allowed to play for the Netherlands.
