An ulus (улу́с; ) is a type of an administrative-territorial unit in two of the republics of Russia. The word means "nation" in many Turkic languages.

Buryat Republic

In the Buryat Republic, "ulus" is a type of rural locality, along with "selo" and "settlement".

Sakha Republic

A typical federal subject of Russia is subdivided into districts (raions). Ulus is an ethnic name for a district, used only in the Sakha Republic.

The Sakha Republic is administratively divided into five cities under the Republic's jurisdiction and 33 uluses. The law of the Sakha Republic establishes that the terms "ulus" and "district" are equivalent. In the course of the Russian municipal reform, two urban okrugs and 34 municipal districts were formed on the basis of the Republic's administrative divisions.

The municipal districts with predominantly Russian population (Aldansky, Lensky, Mirninsky, Momsky, Neryungrinsky, and Tomponsky) do not utilize the term "ulus" in their official names.
