Tibni was a claimant to the throne of the Israel, and the son of Ginath, a man of some position. Albright has dated his reign to 876 - 871 BCE, while Thiele offers the dates 885 - 880 BCE.
Following the death of Zimri, a considerable number of the people chose Tibni as monarch, and he contended for the throne against Omri over the next few years (1 Kings 16:21, 22), only to be defeated. Tibni's death is recorded but not explained.
