Nick and Dave hooked up with vocalist Paul Carden and guitarist Robbie Ross, and began crafting a riff-driven, deep beat classic glam rock sound, and organised showcase gigs at the Cavern Club. After some bigger gigs in London, supporting among others The Who, the band signed to Vertigo Records in 2004. Liam Gallagher from Oasis was present at the signing, but he refused to sign as a witness, so they asked a bystander instead.
The band's debut single, "Get On Your Life", was released in November 2004. The following year saw the release of two more singles, "3345" and "Once in a While", and the band's self-titled debut album. Extensive touring followed National and Worldwide. The band also played dates supporting The Who, Mötley Crüe, Mark Lanegan, Razorlight, The Killers and appeared at the Oxegen, T In The Park, Isle of Wight, Fuji Rock, Reading And Leeds, Glastonbury, Jersey Live and Tennants Vital festivals.
The Black Velvet's song "Fear and Loathing" appeared in the soundtrack to the 2005 combat-driven racing game Burnout Revenge as well as the Playstation Portable version of Burnout Legends.
On Tuesday 21st August 2007 the band announced via their official Myspace page that they'd split up.
Nick now plays with Echo & The Bunnymen
