Simon Islip

Simon Islip (d. 1366) was an English prelate. He served as Archbishop of Canterbury between 1349 and 1366.

Biography

Early life

He was the uncle of William Whittlesey.

Lord Privy Seal

In 1347, possibly in September, Simon was appointed keeper of the Privy Seal. Previously he had held the seal of Lionel, who was the regent in England. He vacated the office between February 21 and May 1 1350.

Archbishop of Canterbury

Simon was elected to the see of Canterbury on September 20 1349, provided to the see on October 7 1349, and entrusted with the temporalities of the diocese on November 15 1349. His consecration took place on December 20 1349.

Death and afterward

Simon Islip died on April 26 1366.
