Sententiae
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Cite This SourceSententiae are brief apophthegms from ancient sources, quoted without context. They were a tool of scholasticism, which was popular in the Middle Ages as a form of rhetoric. They were also used by St. Augustine of Hippo to convince the Church of the value of rhetoric (which was frowned on by many churchmen because it was associated with paganism).
