Scum is the first album by the English grindcore band Napalm Death.
The Side A of the Scum album was originally recorded for £50.00 at Rich Bitch studio (Birmingham, England) in August 1986: it was intended to form part of a split release with the English hardcore thrash group Atavistic on Manic Ears records (Bristol, England). After an extensive line-up change, the second half of Scum was recorded in May 1987 at Rich Bitch studio. The album was released as a single album through Earache Records in July 1987.
The song "You Suffer" was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's shortest song; the track is precisely 1.316 seconds long.
Only drummer Mick Harris played on both sides.
The first pressing of the CD (1988) came as a 54-track CD including the From Enslavement To Obliteration album and 4 bonus tracks. In 1994, the first two albums were re-released separately.
The album cover was designed by Bill Steer's Carcass bandmate, Jeffrey Walker. The album covers came in varied colors: orange, gold, green, blue, yellow.
In 2005, it was voted the 50th best British album of all time by Kerrang! readers.

Album history
Post Do What You Feel pre Say A Prayer, Khanoda co-founded a thrash metal band Armed n Dangerous along with bassist E. Patrick in late 1988; following Khanoda’s return from touring Germany to promote "Feel" the summer of that same year. Although he wasn't the vocalist for the band, Khanoda wrote or co-wrote most of their material. "SCUM," the band’s first and last album, was a conceptual piece based on the 1979 Alan Clarke film of the same name which starred Ray Winstone and was the brainchild of lead vocalist Brandon Rafferty who was a British film buff. Weeks following the album's release, A n D disbanded due to constant in-fighting and tumultuous antics and outbursts on stage, caused entirely by its founding members. Following the breakup of both the band and Khanoda and Patrick, A n D was offered a recording deal from Road Runner Records however, no one who was part of the band was interested to get back together. Although a vast departure musically, Khanoda demonstrated the ability to transcend musical boundaries on "SCUM" which would later reflect in his future efforts as both a conceptual artist and theme driven songwriter.Credits
