Sataspes

Sataspes was a Persian navigator and cavalry commander whose name is derived from Sat (=100 sad) and Asp (= Horse, Asb). He is also credited with originating the term "horse latitudes".

Sataspes was tasked by Xerxes I to circumnavigate Africa. He is notable for having passed the Cape of Good Hope, moving all the way around to Cape Verde. The first time he did so, he encountered gorillas, and he later brought back descriptions of them.
