Routes of infection

Routes of infection are ways in which pathogens may enter the body. The following are the most common:

  • Respiratory: Most common route of infection
  • Skin: typically is the #1 means of defense, if cut may allow infections to enter.
  • Blood: perhaps through contaminated needles etc.
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Urinary
  • Sexual: See Sexually Transmitted Disease
