Additionally, Paxton has put forward a non-traditional definition of fascism: "Fascism may be defined as a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victim-hood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.
Paxton was born in Lexington, Virginia and educated at Washington and Lee University before earning his M.A. at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He earned a Ph.D. at Harvard University. Paxton taught at the University of California, Berkeley and State University of New York at Stony Brook before joining the faculty of Columbia University in New York, where he is now emeritus professor of history.
