Reynosa is a primarily industrial city in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. It is located at , across the Rio Grande (Río Bravo) from the McAllen metropolitan area in the U.S. state of Texas. According to INEGI census 2005 Reynosa's population was 507,998 for the city and 526,888 for the municipality.

History

Reynosa was founded on 14 March, 1749 by Carlos Cantú under the command of José de Escandón y Helguera the Count of Sierra Gorda, and 279 Habitats. But due to flooding in the area on the 4 July 1802, they decided to move 5 miles to the east keeping the same margin between them and the Rio Grande. It was not until 1926 that the state government recognized Reynosa as a city.

Economy

Reynosa is home to many maquiladoras, whose products are distributed internationally. Several international companies have focused business operations on Reynosa and McAllen, Texas because of the convenient trade opportunities offered by the area. Reynosa is connected to McAllen by two bridges: McAllen-Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge and the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge. A third one, Anzalduas International Bridge, is currently under construction. These bridges facilitate international trade thus attracting crowded traffic from other cities in northern Mexico. In recent years, Reynosa has seen an increase in its population as thousands of workers from different parts of the country and the world, most notably from the Mexican State of Veracruz, seek better job opportunities in the city's maquiladora sector and in the oil industry.
