Prix Jean Prat

The Prix Jean Prat is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is presently run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately 1 mile) at Chantilly Racecourse, and it takes place annually in early July.

It was created in 1858 as the first of two races titled the Prix Biennal. The second, for horses aged four-years-old or above, was introduced in 1859. Both races were re-named in 1940 in memory of Jean Prat, a leading French racehorse owner and breeder who died earlier that year. The version for older horses was given a new title in 1985, the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier, while this race retained the title Prix Jean Prat.

From its launch until 1966 the race took place at Longchamp. It was then moved to Chantilly, where it remained until 1985. A second spell at Longchamp began the following year and continued until the race returned to Chantilly in 1995.

Originally contested over 2,000 metres, the race's distance was cut to 1,850 metres in 1962 and to 1,800 metres in 1967. The present distance was introduced in 2005.

In its earlier years the race took place in April and served as a trial for the Prix du Jockey Club. From 1961 until 2004 it was run in late May or early June and seen as a possible intermediate race between the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and the Grand Prix de Paris. Since 2005 it has taken place in early July.

The Prix Jean Prat was promoted to Group 1 status in 1985 having been previously classed as a Group 2 race.
