Dr. Peter Lorange has been the President of the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), a leading global business school based in Switzerland, since July 1, 1993. Lorange retired as President on March 31, 2008. He is retiring at the end of his third five-year contract, at which time he reached IMD’s mandatory retirement age.

During Lorange’s tenure as President of IMD, the Business School has moved from strength to strength. Revenues as well as the number of faculty and staff at IMD have grown dramatically over the years under his leadership. IMD now sits at the forefront of executive education, as reflected in well-subscribed executive development programs, top rankings, a growing list of IMD Learning Network companies, world-class faculty and top international participants. Lorange’s retirement coincided with the ground-breaking for IMD’s fourth building project under his leadership, a new center for executive learning.

Lorange is Professor of Strategy and holds the Nestlé Chair. His areas of special interest are global strategic management, strategic planning and entrepreneurship for growth. He has conducted extensive research on multinational management, strategic planning processes and internally generated growth processes.

He was formerly president of the Norwegian School of Management in Oslo. Before this, Lorange was affiliated with the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, for more than a decade, in various assignments, including director of the Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies, and The William H. Wurster Center for International Management Studies, as well as The William H. Wurster Professor of Multinational Management. He has also taught for 8 years at the Sloan School of Management (M.I.T.).

Lorange received his undergraduate education from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business, was awarded an MA degree in operations management from Yale University, and his Doctor of Business Administration degree from Harvard University. He has written or edited 18 books and some 120 articles.

He serves on the board of directors of several corporations including: Christiania Eiendomsselskap, S. Ugelstad Shipowners, StreamServe, Zaruma Resources Inc, Preferred Global Health and Seaspan Corporation. He is also a board member of IMD and of the Copenhagen Business School.
