. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh
. He is best known for his biography of Francis Younghusband
which won both the Somerset Maugham Award
and the Royal Society of Literature W. H. Heinemann Prize
. He is a former director (i.e. a non-executive board member) of the Free Tibet Campaign.
He studied literature at the University of Edinburgh
