Nore - 3 reference results

The Nore is a sandbank at the mouth of the Thames Estuary, England, near the town of Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey. It marks the point where the River Thames meets the North Sea.

The Nore is a hazard to shipping, so in 1732 the world's first lightship was moored over it in an experiment by Robert Hamblin, who patented the idea. The experiment must have proved successful, because by 1819 England had nine lightships. The Nore lightship was run by Trinity House, Britain's General Lighthouse Authority.

The early Nore lightships were small wooden vessels, often Dutch-built galliots. By the end of the 19th century a larger ship with a revolving light had appeared, but after about 1915 the authorities ceased to use a lightship. Sea Reach No. 1 Buoy as of 2006 marks the anchorage-point of the former lightship, about mid-way between Shoeburyness in Essex and the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. This defines the limit of the Thames and the beginning of the North Sea.

From 1899 to 1955, the Royal Navy maintained a Commander-in-Chief at the Nore, a senior officer responsible for protecting the entrance to the port of London, and merchant traffic along the east coast of Britain.

Mutiny

In May/June 1797 the anchorage adjoining the Nore witnessed a mutiny in the British Royal Navy fleet then lying here, known as the Mutiny of the Nore.

Victor Santiago Jr., (born September 6, 1976) better known by his stage names as Noreaga and N.O.R.E., is an Afro-Puerto Rican American rapper, and one half of the hip hop duo Capone-n-Noreaga, along with Capone.

He was born to an African American mother and Puerto Rican father. He has more recently released reggaeton records in addition to his traditional hip-hop fare. In more recent news on his reggaeton movement, he was signed to Jay-Z sub-label, Roc-La-Familia , but is no longer signed to Def Jam or Roc-A-Fella Records due to poor promotion from the label.

He also collaborated on the hit single "Más Maíz" which included artists such as Nina Sky, Fat Joe, Chingo Bling, Lil Rob, and Lumidee. N.O.R.E. has his own label, Thugged Out Militainment. N.O.R.E. is now signed to Baby Grande Records where he released his latest album Noreality.

N.O.R.E. is a backronym for Niggaz On (the) Run Eatin'. His previous alias, Noreaga, is derived from the Panamanian general Manuel Noriega, convicted of drug running. Penalty Recordings, his former label, owns the "Noreaga" name, which forced him to bill himself differently after moving to Def Jam Recordings via Roc-A-Fella Records.

N.O.R.E. was recently featured on the track "Bounce" by MSTRKRFT which was released on April 1, 2008.
