in Kanagawa Prefecture
, with an area of 6.98 km². The population is 85,370. It includes the major commercial hub extending from the Yokohama Station area through the new Minato Mirai 21 complex, which is home to the Yokohama Landmark Tower

pass. The northernmost and southernmost points are upland. The Minato Mirai complex is built on reclaimed land. Nishi-ku is surrounded on its land sides by four other wards of Yokohama: Naka

The region once belonged to Tachibana
and Kuraki Districts
in Musashi Province
(later, Kanagawa Prefecture
). It encompasses the former Kanagawa-juku and Hodogaya-juku, post stations on the Tōkaidō
. Beginning in 1901, some parcels became part of the city of Yokohama. The process became complete in 1911. Yokohama's wards were established in 1927, with this area becoming part of the Kanagawa and Naka wards. In 1944, Nishi became a ward of Yokohama.
