Nikolaos Kanabos was elected Emperor of Byzantium on 25 January 1204 by an assembly of the Senate and the priests of Constantinople, but refused to accept the election. On 5 February, Alexios V, who had deposed the legitimate Emperors Isaac II and Alexios IV, imprisoned him and had him strangled on the same day as Alexios IV.
