Henderson joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1980 after completing a cadetship with the Leader Associated Newspapers - the network of News Limited local newspapers in Victoria - and has worked as a state political and industrial reporter, as well as a correspondent for ABC TV Europe. He is currently a committie member of the Melbourne Press Club . He is a supporter of the Melbourne Football Club in the AFL.

From 11th July 2008, Ian Henderson is on leave, and is currently not presenting ABC News Victoria. Tamara Oudyn is currently presenting the Victorian edition of ABC News.
