The club was founded in 1908 and was laid out by Charles Blair Macdonald, who had been schooled at St. Andrews in the 1870s.
"The National" was thirteenth in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Courses Ranking for 2007.
The course is laid out over 350 acres and plays 6,876 yards from the red tees. It is adjacent to another great US course, Shinnecock Hills.
