Plot

J.D. struggles with an apartment search and turning 30 as he realizes he has accomplished none of the goals he had hoped to accomplish by this age. Some of J.D.'s goals include: Get married, buy a house, learn difference between Senator and Congressman, sleep naked on a hammock, learn another language, invent a cereal, and complete a triathlon. Determined to meet one goal before the exact minute he turns 30, he enters a triathlon. As J.D. struggles, he and Elliot bond and rebuild their friendship. With Elliot's support, he finishes before officially turning 30.

Elliot is searching for a roommate to split her rent because, unbeknownst to Turk and J.D., Elliot has lost her fellowship. The two refuse to live together, explaining they only have a superficial friendship after J.D. broke her heart. Elliot tries to live with her boyfriend Jake, but only if he can open up to her. She persuades him to open up about his sexual fantasy, which horrifies her. After deep conversations during J.D.'s triathlon, she realizes Jake is not right for her and they break up; J.D. and Elliot have also strengthened their friendship such that they feel comfortable living together.

Turk competes for one of four attending slots among 12 surgical residents by ingratiating himself with the senior staff. Later, his appendicectomy patient requests the use of hypnosis rather than anesthesia due to the risk of surgical error. Initially against the idea, a conversation with Dr. Kelso changes his mind as he can use this surgery to stand out amidst the surgical residents. He vacillates between his options, ultimately believing in hypnosis after Carla, who used hypnosis to quit smoking, tells him to trust his wife. However, half-way through the surgery, the hypnosis loses its effect, discouraging and upsetting Turk; his spirits are lifted when Kelso reassures him that this is an accomplishment nonetheless and he succeeded in separating himself from the pack of residents.

Production details

  • The title of this episode either comes from the Marx brothers movie A Day at The Races or the Queen album "A day at the races", which itself is a reference to the Marx Brothers film.
  • Dr. Cox's comment that you always side with the person you are romantically involved with and calling not doing that a "Rookie mistake," is a reference to a similar line in My Bed Banter & Beyond.
  • The song "Kung Fu Fighting", which plays during the fantasy with Turk and The Todd fighting off the surgeons, was previously sung by J.D. in the episode His Story.
