Monterey is a town in Highland County, Virginia, United States. The population was 158 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Highland County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²), all of it land.
There were 90 households out of which 16.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.6% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 51.1% were non-families. 48.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.76 and the average family size was 2.48.
In the town the population was spread out with 14.6% under the age of 18, 1.3% from 18 to 24, 17.1% from 25 to 44, 36.1% from 45 to 64, and 31.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 53 years. For every 100 females there were 69.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 64.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $36,786, and the median income for a family was $45,625. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $16,625 for females. The per capita income for the town was $26,379. None of the families and 3.5% of the population were living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 4.9% of those over 64.
