MCV is a United Kingdom-based trade magazine focused on the video game industry. It is published weekly, every Friday and is primarily aimed at a business audience. It is available via subscription only. The first issue was published 1998.
MCV is unique in regards to UK video game magazines since it is not aimed at a consumer audience, nor is it available for purchase through retailers. It is also the only video games related publication in the United Kingdom to be printed weekly.
As standard, each issue is at least 40 pages which consist of news, often exclusive to or broken through MCV, features aimed specifically at issues with the games industry, a personnel section looking at movements within the games industry, as well as a 'Retail Only' section which has deep analysis of the weeks games charts, the weekly updated release schedules, retail focused reviews of upcoming games and products, retail focused features, advice and letters.
The magazine is multiformat covering all aspects of the games industry and does not show bias towards or against any particular format, although is known to unflatteringly analyse every issue with a product that may be doing badly.
It is released weekly on a Friday. Although most readers receive it via subscription (£150 a year), it is available on request for a nominal price of £3.25 per issue.
The magazine is targeted almost exclusively at retail and the games industry itself although there are some subscribers who do not belong to either readership.
MCV has a reputation within the games industry for being one of the main sources for exclusive news. News occupies the front section of the magazine and focuses on a range of issues from product launches through to appointments throughout the games industry.
MCV's focus on features related to various issues within the games industry such as its annual analysis of the previous years charts, and burning issues such as "The Threat to Retail" in issue 423.
Unlike consumer magazines, MCV's reviews are not designed, nor written in order to assist a potential purchasers choice, but to inform retailers about what major upcoming releases are about in order to help customers with any questions posed.
MCV and Japanese video game magazine Famitsu have an exclusive partnership which sees news and content from each magazine appear in the other.
