The
Maine Senate is the
upper house of the
Maine Legislature, the
state legislature of the
U.S. state of
Maine. The Senate consists of 35 members representing an equal number of districts across the state. Unlike the
lower House, the Senate does not set aside nonvoting seats for
Native tribes. Because it is a part-time position, members of the Maine Senate usually have outside employment as well.
The Senate meets at the Maine State House in Augusta.
Leadership
Unlike a fair share of
U.S. states, the Senate's leadership does not stem from the
Lieutenant Governor, as
Maine is one of a few states not to have the office. The leadership instead falls in the hands of the Senate President, who is also the first in the
Gubernatorial line of succession. The Maine Senate is currently the only body of its kind in the United States where all the major chamber positions are held by women.
