Lebanese March 14 movement
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Cite This SourceOn March 14th 2005, one month after the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on February 14, 2005, over 1 million Lebanese nationals marched into Martyr square in downtown Beirut, that later was known as Freedom square, in a protest against the Syrian presence and the Syrian backed government. Protesters demanded that the truth on who assassinated Prime Minister Hariri. be reveled. This day marked the beginning of the Cedar Revolution and the movement became known as Lebanese March 14 movement.
Several Lebanese Leaders who opposed Syrian occupation allied together and was later known as March 14 Alliance.
March 14 forces are an alliance that is made up of several anti-Syrians parties as well as more than 1 million Lebanese. Major parties and leaders are:
- Lebanese Forces
- Qornet Shehwan Gathering
- Phalangist or Kataeb Party
- National Liberal Party
- Tripoli Bloc
- Democratic Renewal
- Democratic Left
- Rep. Samir Franjyeh.
- Rep. Jubran Twaini (was later assassinated)
- Rep. Naela Moawad (Wife of President Reneh Moawad who was assassinated in 1989)
- Rep. Fares Saaid
- Rep. Bahia Hariri (Sister of Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri)
and other leaders from what were known as (Qournat Shahwan alliance).
The Lebanese March 14 movement , forced the Prime Minster Omar Karamy and his cabinet to resign on that day.
